School Holiday Programs - Are They Better Than Other Options?

School holiday programs are designed and run to keep your children supervised and entertained at the same time. They cater for children of all ages and needs, and they also cater for all needs you as parents may have in regards to the amount of time you require them to be in care and your budget limitations. To decide if you think they are the better option you first need to consider all the other options available to you.

Other Options Available

Some options available and their advantages/pitfalls could be as follows.
  • Leaving children unsupervised: If your children are old enough and mature enough that you, as their parent, consider them capable of staying at home alone and unsupervised then perhaps you may consider this option. Obviously budget wise this would be one of the more cost effective options. However can you put a price on your child's safety? Leaving your child at home unsupervised can raise some safety concerns so this option needs to be considered carefully.
  • Leaving children with another adult: You may decide to leave you child in the care of another adult. This may be a grandparent or neighbour or even a nanny. Again, in leaving them with their grandparent this may prove to be financially a good option but you will have to consider any possible health issues (i.e., perhaps age may become an issue, keeping up with young children is a tiring adventure). You will also need to consider if the adult is trustworthy. Just because someone is an adult it doesn't necessarily make him or her reliable or trustworthy. Leaving your children with someone like a nanny can be not only costly but also hard to find one that you feel comfortable leaving your children with.
  • Regular Day-Care: You may be able to place your children in a long day-care centre but many of these only cater for children up to school age so will not be a viable option if your children are older. Also if your child is in this kind of care during the school term they may enjoy the change of going to one that caters especially for the school holidays.

School Holiday Programs

There are a few distinct advantages in having your children participate in school holiday programs and they are definitely worth serious consideration when comparing all the options available. Qualified professionals that work in the industry normally run school holiday programs so you can rest assured as to your child's safety and wellbeing. Another advantage of being run by experienced providers means that they know what activities and games the children really enjoy. Some are also set up with overnight stays, which can add another layer of fun and excitement for children. Some school holiday programs are set up to be quite intensive so that your child can learn a new skill or sport in a short amount of time that can't be done during the school term. This provides your child with an opportunity to learn a couple of new skills each holiday period. And as a lot of them are run by registered service providers you may be eligible for the child care benefits provided by the Family Assistance Office to help with the costs.
