Activities for a Rainy Day

It is not easy to predict the weather so it is a good idea to have in mind bad weather or some rainy day activities for your kids.
Here are few ideas in and around your house:

  • Have a picnic in your own living room. Get your kids to help you prepare the picnic basket and let them set up the rugs on the floor.
  • Hire a DVD and watch it together with some popcorn.
  • Music and dancing - put your kids favourite music on and let them have some fun. This is a perfect way to burn off some energy. You can also play musical chairs (if there are more kids).
  • Board games and card games are another fun thing to do; it can be played by the whole family.
  • Crafts – make a card for someone special.
  • Puzzles are also great way to keep your kids busy and amused. You could buy a puzzle book or cut out puzzles from newspapers and magazines.
  • Get your kids to help you clean the house or their own room (depending on their age) Kids can also decorate their room(s) the way they like. It is a fun way to getting them to help out with the cleaning!
  • Do some cooking (bake a cake, muffins, biscuits, or make a pizza). Recently I had a cooking session with my son who is just a bit over 3 years old.  I had prepared some fillings for a pizza, and got him to make is own. The look on his face when we got the pizza out of the oven was priceless. He was so happy and amazed that he actually had made his own pizza.

Let’s face it, it is not easy to keep your kids locked up in the house, so if you would like to take them out during the rainy days, here are few indoor venues to consider:

  • Go to your local library (look out for the story time timetables).
  • Go Ten Pin Bowling (Belconnen, Phillip, Tuggeranong).
  • Go and watch a movie at the cinema
  • Visit Questacon Canberra. (Check out the Q Club membership which offers unlimited entry)
  • Go to KidCity  (Mitchell) or Fun factory (Kambah)
