Home Made Goo

An activity for you and the kids to make together that the kids will find amazing (and you might too) is to make homemade goo. This will provide hours of fun, but remind the kids to keep their mess contained. Maybe a large plastic container, or a couple of smaller one for each child if there is more than one, is a good idea.

Ingredients

  • Cornstarch
  • Water
  • Food colouring
  • Container

Method

Combine cornstarch, water and a couple of drops of food colouring in your container. Mix together until combined and then get your hands in there and have a feel. The mixture will harden in the bowl and in your hands but when you open your finger it will return to a liquid form and run back into the bowl.

Another recipe that can be used to give you more of a solid substance that can be lifted out of the bowl and played with by the kids is more of a homemade flubber recipe. This one however is not suitable for young children to use unsupervised as it contains Borax (a laundry powder)

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of glue (something like Clag will be fine)
  • food colouring (add this to the glue before adding the water)
  • 1 ½ cups of warm water

Mix these in one bowl.

  • 1 1/3 cups of warm water
  • 4 tablespoons of borax powder

Mix these in another bowl.

Method

  1. After combining the above ingredients in their separate bowls combine the two bowls into one.
  2. Stir around until it forms a jelly like substance. Note: not all the water will be mixed in, that's fine.
  3. Lift out of the bowl onto a non-porous surface and knead.
  4. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to six weeks. You'll know when it's no good because it will start to mould.
